A distinction is made between the following fruit types:
Cherry tomato/cherry tomato
These types of tomatoes usually have a fruit weight of 20 grams and are very sweet. The fruit shape as well as the color varies. Due to the many small fruits, the harvesting effort is higher than, for example, B. with salad or beef tomatoes.
Cocktail tomato
They usually have a fruit weight of around 20 grams to 60 grams. Due to the many small fruits, the harvesting effort is higher than, for example, B. with salad or beef tomatoes.
Salad or round tomato
Salad tomatoes are rich in jelly and therefore very juicy. The fruits can weigh between 60 grams and 100 grams.
Meattomato
Beefsteak tomatoes have very large fruits with many chambers and little jelly. This is also how you can easily recognize them. They reach a fruit weight of approx. 100 g to 1000 g. There are two types
-
Oxheart (heart-shaped/bag-shaped fruits)
-
Marmande types (flat-round and ribbed)
They generally ripen late and need a lot of sunlight as well as a lot of warmth.
vine tomato
When ripe, the fruits remain attached to the panicle for a long time without falling off, as is the case with many other tomato varieties. The harvesting effort is therefore lower and the panicle can be harvested fully ripe.
Flaschentomato
Bottle tomatoes are a specific variety of tomatoes known for their elongated, pear-shaped, or bottle-like shape. They have an intense taste, are fleshy and have less juice and seeds compared to other types of tomatoes. These tomatoes are good for sauces, pasta dishes, salads and pickling, as they are often perceived as more flavorful due to the lower amount of water.
Wild tomato
These are natural species that have not been modified through breeding. They are adapted to their respective habitat solely through natural selection. Because of this, they are more robust and also more resistant to disease. It is precisely these resistance genes that are of interest to breeders.
